Pet of the Week
Please Adopt Today
By Mickey Richards
There are some real special dogs and cats at the shelter
right now. Some of their stories are unique, some are
heartbreaking. That's alright, as long as they end up being
warm and fuzzy endings. Let's see if we might be able to spark
an interest in one of our available pets.
Our first dog is Sydney, she is around 9 months old and she
came in as a stray along with another dog that looked identical
to her. She has beautiful light blue eye and a short coat. We
got out the breed book to find out what her heritage might be
and discovered that Sydney is what they call a Canaan herding
dog. The are prevalent in the south and are used for herding
sheep or they make excellent agility dogs. They are very docile,
gentle, very intelligent, they are wary of strangers but very
protective of family. She would need a fenced in yard and to be
exercised.
You might have remembered seeing Sydney walking in the Tip Up
Town Parade several weeks ago. She loves going for walks and
gets along great with other dogs. Her adoption fee is $50.00.
Gabe was adopted from another shelter and was loved by his
family. They said that Gabe was a great dog and got along great
with their 2 small boys. The problem was, when the boys would
play rough and yell and scream, Gabe got upset. This to him
meant someone was being hurt. He never did anything but Gabe's
owner was concerned that his over protectiveness might be a
problem at some time in the future. She told us Gabe was a
great dog and would probably do better in a home setting where
the children were older and not so wild. Gabe is around 3 years
old and already neutered, housebroken and well behaved.
Phatso, got his name when he first came into the shelter as a
stray and was nothing more than a mere skelton, thus the name
Phatso. He has put on some weight but watches his figure like a
teenaged girl. He has been at the shelter for quite some time
and I really don't understand why. He is the nicest, gentlest
and most loving dog. He is a Shepherd/Husky/Beagle mix who is
now around a year old. My heart just goes out to him, he needs a
family and some kids to cuddle next to watching tv and sharing
popcorn with.

Bandit is another dog, who is quiet
doesn't draw allot of attention to himself. We walked Bandit in the
Tip Up Town Parade and he was so good, he loved the time he spent
wrestling with the other dogs who were waiting to walk in the
parade. . It was the best time he had had in a long time. He liked
his handler in the parade and loved the extra attention he had
gotten that day. It is surprising what a little love and attention
can do for a lonely dog. At the end of the parade he had to go back
to the kennel and it was very sad. Bandit is a little over a year
old and is an Austrailian Heeler mix.
Grab a kleenex before you start reading this next story as it is
a heartbreaker. Kasey is around 8 years old, a Golden Retriever mix
who is already neutered. His owner was going to compete in the
Special Olympics and he couldn't take his dog and he couldn't find
anyone to care for him. He couldn't afford to board him either, so
he relinquished him over to the shelter. Kasey was truly loved, he
had been well trained, they had gotten him neutered. Kasey is so
gentle and loving but he was grossly overweight, probably 20 lbs,
his toenails were extremely long, his ears badly infected, his long
coat badly matted. He has an appointment to go to the groomers for a
makeover soon. This sad and forlorn dog, will hopefully, come back
feeling like a new dog, a catepillar who blossomed into a beautiful
butterfly. with a second chance at new life and a loving home,
Peek-a-boo, is a white tabby, short hair who is around a year old.
She got her name as she was always trying to hide. There is not
allot of places to hide in a 2x3 cage but she would manage to hide
under her cat bed and would only peek out when someone would come
into the room. If you would take away her bed, she would dump over
her litterbox and hide under it. She was recently spayed and is
ready to play "Peek-a-Boo" in her new home.
We have Twix in a foster home as she is a 15 year old, senior cat
that is now homeless. Her owners were going to euthanize her because
they had lost their home and were homeless, it didn't seem fair that
Twix would have to lose her life because her owners had no place to
go, she had done nothing to deserve that kind of fate. Her age puts
her at high risk of dying in a shelter setting so we were fortunate
enought to find a wonderful temporary home for her. If you could
find it in your heart to let a cat live out its life knowing that it
was still loved, please call it's foster mom at 989-366-5827
